A Dressing Table should be functional as well as attractive in order to fit into your overall bedroom design. It’s where we spend a lot of time in the morning – whether it’s styling our hair, applying makeup, or getting ready for work – and it’s an important part of our routine.

You should place something tall next to your hanging mirror or artwork, which will help to divide your space. ‘A second lamp would work well; if your bedroom already has a bedside lamp, go for a tall houseplant or a tall pillar candle,’ Vanessa says. This gives your dresser personality and helps to balance your focal point.’

However, with tangled jewelry on the side and toiletries that should be left in the bathroom, a vanity table can easily become neglected – raise your hand if you’re guilty! An unruly dressing table can make your bedroom look cluttered and unattractive, so we’ve gathered the best dressing table ideas, along with some styling tips and tricks from interior designer Vanessa Arbuthnott, to help you turn a dresser into a luxurious part of any bedroom.

To provide visual balance, your dressing table requires something big on the wall. ‘If your dresser is next to a window, nothing is required, but if it isn’t, you could hang a large mirror to make your room appear larger,’ Vanessa says. You could also hang a single piece of artwork or a collection of smaller images to add depth and style to your dressing room. Vanessa recommends hanging your focal point at least half the width of the dresser’s top but no wider than the dresser itself.

A tall, narrow vase is also a good choice. For a chic dressing table top, go bold with a pop of color and a single stem (faux flowers would work well in this setting).

What is the best way to keep everything on a dressing table organised? Using a tray, keep them in order. Make a separate tray for makeup and jewellery so that you can find everything when you need it instead of making it tangled up in drawers. If a tray isn’t available, a jewellery box with multiple compartments is a good alternative.

If you have a small dressing table, choosing one with plenty of drawer space and purchasing drawer dividers is a good idea. You can either make your own or purchase them online at John Lewis and Amazon. When you see everything clean and tidy, you will be delighted!

When it comes to any room in the house, lighting is a critical, if not critical, component. A Hollywood-style mirror will allow you to get ready in perfect lighting and will add a touch of glam to your space if you want to go all out. ‘If you want to add some atmosphere, try hanging mood lighting above your ceiling; this will free up surface space on your dresser for more objects,’ Vanessa advises.
